Width Sympathy

Post by Dr3d Sl3d »

It appears that folks are sometimes misusing the word, Depth. I dasn't know if this is deliberate or by accident, but almost always, we cutters are meaning to speak of the width across the top of the groove when we give a number for the Depth. If the pitch is 400 LPI and the grooves are wide enough that they leave only about 20 percent of the land in between them, the width is close to 2 mils and the depth would actually be just 1 mil. The included angle for micro-groove cutting is 90 degrees. So, whatever the depth at any moment, the width is double that. From the tip to the top of the blade is the vertex of an upside-down, equilateral triangle. The blade is tall enough (that is, the upside down triangle part of the jewel) that you can definitely scrape the aluminum substrate well before burying the triangle in lacquer. Most lacquer coatings are only about 7 mils thick... Don't purl your jamb.
